Dust Mites and How to get rid of them
Wingless, oval-shaped and about half a millimetre long, dust mites are one of the most common house bugs. For a bug so small they can cause quite some damage. They feed on dust, which mainly comprises of shed skin flakes, pollen and fungal spores. There are nearly 47 species of house dust mites. Dust mites are known to trigger allergies and cause discomfort. They are associated with causing dermatological and respiratory allergies in humans, such as eczema and asthma.
Where are they found most commonly?
- mattresses and bed linen
- upholstered furniture
- rugs and carpets
- curtains
- soft toys.
Symptoms of dust allergy
- wheezing
- coughing
- breathlessness
- a tight feeling in the chest
- runny nose
- skin rashes
How to mite-proof your home?
While you can’t completely eliminate dust mites, their population in your home can be reduced by following a few easy steps.
- Wash rugs and mats regularly
- Wash bedding weekly
- Avoid smoking indoors
- Avoid heavy curtains
- Avoid soft toys
- Reduce humidity – have a dry and well-ventilated house. Have adequate floor and wall insulation and avoid evaporative coolers.
- Avoid upholstered furniture. Use leather, vinyl or wood instead.
- Vacuum and dust frequently
- Avoid too many house plants
